Hope For A Better Life Foundation

HISTORY

In a village in Imo State Nigeria, schoolgirls aged 11-17 at Imerienwe Girls Secondary School (IGSS) were being raped simply because they wanted to use the bathroom. In a school of over 300, the girls couldn’t always wait to use the ONE latrine shared by over 300 classmates. Consequently, many girls would use the bathroom in secluded bushes near the school. It was in these remote, unsupervised areas where the sexual assaults would occur.

Dr. James and Laetitia Odunze heard about these encounters and started the organization HOPE FOR A BETTER LIFE FOUNDATION (HFABLF). Initially with their own meager funds and eventually with donations from generous friends, they turned one latrine for 300+ girls into 8 bathrooms (6 for the girls, 1 for the female teachers, 1 for the male teachers) with flushing toilets and running faucets.

Additionally, HFABLF has distributed paper, notebooks, pens, and other school supplies to needy students in Nigeria.

MISSION

The goals of the Foundation are to combat community deterioration by advancing education, first in Imo State and eventually in all sub-Saharan African nations by:

1. Maintaining, repairing, and renovating existing schools.

2. Providing assistance and funding for the advancement of education and non-partisan civic leadership and learning programs for children, adolescents, and young adults.

3. Building and maintaining clean water projects.
